Interview: Behind the Scenes of A Murder Mystery

Blood Me Up Marjorie!

Brighton Fringe Interviews: Steve Hemsley

Always wanted to see what goes on backstage of a murder mystery, where things are not always what they seem. Even wanted to watch as people battle to keep their event alive and their dead body dead. Then Steve Hemsley and Aly Cranston’s Blood Me Up Marjorie! might be just the show for you. Nick caught up with Steve to find out more.

Blood Me Up Marjorie! plays at Half A Camel – The Joker from Friday 2 – Tuesday 6 May. Further information and tickets available here.

Show in a nutshell?

A comedy looking at what goes on behind the scenes of a murder mystery company.

What was your inspiration?

Me and co-actor/writer Aly Cranston have been performing in murder mysteries for a few years and the stories we could tell! We wanted to create a fun show looking at that world, from mis-castings and actors failing to follow the plot, to what weapons to use and how to die effectively!

Have you done Brighton Fringe before? How would you sum up the experience?

Yes. First time last year at Brighton Open Air Theatre. It is an extremely friendly and vibrant event. The creativity community working together to make magic.

Do you plan to take the show on elsewhere after Brighton?

Yes. It will be performed at Tunbridge Wells Fringe in June, Faversham Fringe in October and Edinburgh Festival in 2026.

What are the challenges you’ve faced with the show?

It is quite a speedy show and with only two actors that has been a challenge we have relished.

Why should people come to your show?

It’s a clever two-hander where the action doesn’t stop. Two actors, six characters, quick changes, lots of props and loads of funny stuff.

Do you have funding?

We have self-funded this show. It would be great to break even, but Fringe shows are about much more than the money.
