Interview: Like An O2 Concert On A Budget

The Camden Fringe Interviews

Marcus Megastar: HeartThrob UK Tour 2025, Museum of Comedy

With the festival now up and running, we near the end of our Camden Fringe 2025 interview series, because it would be utter madness to do both at the same time wouldn’t it! Well, ok, we’ve got a few days overlap, with the festival having started yesterday (Monday 28 July) and new interviews being published until Thursday (31 July). You can find them all here.

Marcus Megastar (Superstar Internationale!) is gracing Camden with his HeartThrob UK Tour 2025 for two nights only at the Museum of Comedy (22 and 23 August, tickets here). And as the name might make clear, he is a big star so we should all be honoured to be in the same room. Which is why we felt extremely priviledged that he deemed us worthy for a short moment of his time to answer a few questions.

What can audiences expect from the show?

“Like An O2 Concert On A Budget!” – Miss Hope Springs

A Real Fantastic Mix Of Storytelling, Comedy, Impersonation & Musicality. Really made me smile!” – DJ Wolfy

Get yourself cheered up loves. Arriving by stretch limo, expect a fizzing immersive one-man show with live music and comedy including the characters of Madam Cyn, Britain’s most notorious brothel keeper, Giacomo Leopardi, the hunched depressive genius who died and a virgin and new for 2025, Ronnie Kray live from Broadmoor Hospital for the criminally insane!

Building on his successful run at Edinburgh PBH’s The Free Fringe in 2023, Marcus is back! Bigger songs, bigger jokes, bigger hair! See you there!

Is Camden Fringe going to be the show’s first time on stage, or have you already performed elsewhere?

I first performed at Wandsworth Fringe and won an honorarium award. I then won an Arts Grant and developed my show. I took it to Wandsworth, Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe in 2022. In 2023 I did a three week run at Edinburgh at PBH’s The Free Fringe.

What was your inspiration behind the show?

To never just stand there and sing. I find it a bit boring. So I use immersive screens, characters, instruments and comedy to make it all much more interesting and a scream.

Is this version how you originally envisioned it or has it changed drastically since you first put pen to paper?

This year I have added new jokes and one new character I am excited to play.

What is it about your character that you most enjoy and what’s been more challenging?

I love all my characters, Marcus Megastar gets to wear some pretty flamboyant outfits and can have quite an acid tongue but such loveable charm! Madam Cyn is always a riot and loves getting naughty with the audience.

I have taken cabaret courses so that has helped and really studied my characters.

Being a fringe festival, we all know sets have to be bare minimum, how have you got around this with your set and props?

Immersive Screens, some very clever tricks for the costume changes!

How important is audience interaction to you?

The audience are there for a top night out so of course there will be lots of surprises and audience interaction.

Are there any plans for what comes next after the show has finished its run – for you or the show?

Marcus Megastar will be collected by Mo Hito, his limo driver, and fly back in his private plane where he has a Hollywood A-list star pining for his return, naked with just an apple in his mouth… Adieu!

If you had to describe your show as a colour what would it be?

Rainbow as it is so inclusive.

If you could perform this show anywhere in the world where would it be?

Adelaide Fringe. I love going down under 🙂

What is the weirdest or most unconventional prop used in your show?

I have a funeral wreath spelling the words SEX which was inspired by Madam Cyn’s aka Cynthia Payne’s own funeral.

If budget or reality was not an issue, what’s the one piece of scenery/set you’d love to have in your show?

I would like to be filmed naked and strapped down in an asylum for the criminally insane for my new character Ronnie Kray.

What words of advice/encouragement would you give anyone thinking about doing Camden Fringe next year?

Dream it. Do it! Stick to the plan! Give up drinking and then there’s bugger all else to do but work hard on it!

Thanks to Marcus for gracing us with his presence. Marcus Megastar: HeartThrob UK Tour 2025 plays at Museum of Comedy on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 August.
