Interview: One Show, Three Powerful Feminist Works

The Camden Fringe Interviews

Threefold, Rosemary Branch Theatre

For Camden Fringe 2025 we plan to publish 100 interviews to highlight as many of the shows performing as we possibly can. There will be new interviews every day throughout July, so do keep coming back to see how close to our target we can get. You can find all currently pubslihed interviews here.

Ellen Oliver‘s Threefold is a dance based triple bill performed by female-identifying/presenting artists, exploring themes of autonomy, power, intimacy, and connection. Each piece offers a distinct choreographic world – raw, tender, explosive, and deeply human.  We had the chance to talk to the Ellen Oliver about how the show was coming together.

What can audiences expect from the show?

Threefold is a night of bold, unapologetic dance from emerging choreographers. Gritty, powerful, and rooted in feminist expression, these works explore identity, autonomy, and the body as protest. Raw, physical, and unfiltered. This is dance that hits hard and stays with you.

Is Camden Fringe going to be the show’s first time on stage, or have you already performed elsewhere?

Threefold will make its debut at Camden Fringe. Bringing together three distinct works for the first time, this triple bill was created to celebrate bold, feminist choreography in an independent, grassroots setting, which makes Camden Fringe the perfect fit. It’s an exciting platform for new voices, and we’re thrilled to launch the show here.

What was your inspiration behind the show?

It is inspired by the female experience and desire to create a platform for emerging artists to take up space: physically, creatively, unapologetically.

How long have you been working on the production?

This production brings together works at different stages of their creative lives. Kiss Garden is a long-standing piece that continues to evolve with each performance. AFTERS was originally created two years ago and was recently further developed during a short residency at The Lighthouse Theatre in Poole. Preen is a brand new work, created especially for this evening. Together, they form a powerful conversation about identity, connection, and expression.

How important is audience interaction to you?

For Threefold, the connection between performers and audience is everything. These are works designed to be felt, to spark recognition, provoke emotion, and hold attention through raw physicality. We want the audience to be right there with us: moved, unsettled, energised, and seen.

If your show had a soundtrack, what songs would definitely be on it, and why?

Charli XCX’s BRAT album

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received during your career, and how has it influenced your work on this show?

One of the most valuable pieces of advice we’ve received is to trust the mess and that clarity and connection often come through experimentation, not perfection. This mindset has shaped Threefold entirely. Each piece embraces process, instinct, and honest expression, allowing space for risk, individuality, and real emotional impact.

Thanks for your time, Ellen. Threefold will play at the Rosemary Branch Theatre on Friday 1 August.
