Interview: From Eurovision to Brighton Fringe

Almost Famous

Brighton Fringe Interviews: Andy Moseley

As well as writing and directing his own Brighton Fringe show, Nick Myles somehow found the time to grab six of his fellow writers to find out more about their shows. You can find details of all the others here.

Here Andy Moseley tells us more about Almost Famous, a new one woman show about the lives we have lived, the lives we would have chosen to live, and the difference between the two.

Almost Fasmous plays Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May at The Actors Theatre. Further information and tickets available here.

Show in a nutshell.

Emily Benton is back in the UK after a career that took her to Broadway and Hollywood. The truth about Emily and the industry is the subject of this new one woman play.

What was your inspiration?

A writing prompt of ā€œsunshine after the rainā€ during lockdown. Three years on, I returned to the character, thought about her history, realised it was something she would lie about, and had my inspiration.

Why Brighton Fringe?

Emily’s showbiz story starts in 1974 at the Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Brighton. That, and the fact that Brighton is the first fringe of the season, made me want to make it the place where the play gets its premiere.

Have you done Brighton Fringe before?

Yes, in 2011 with my first play, and then in 2020 and 2021. 2020 felt special but weird, great to be part of getting theatre back after lockdown, but a very different vibe from a normal fringe.

Who do you think your show will appeal to?

Gen Xers who are just starting to realise that there’s now two generations who are younger than them and only one that’s older. Anyone with an interest in what older actors were like when they were young.

Do you plan on taking the show elsehwere after Brighton?

We’re taking it to GM Fringe and Buxton Fringe in July and then a two-week run at Edinburgh in August.

Chances of breaking even?

We don’t have funding, and this is the first of four fringe festivals we’re doing this year. The last one is Edinburgh. If we weren’t based there, our chances of breaking even would be zero.

Many thanks to Andy for their time. You can book tickets to see Almost Famous show here.
