Interview: Tuning into the Afterlife at Camden Fringe

The Camden Fringe Interviews

Other Mysteries Theatre on The Graveyard Snack

We first came across Other Mysteries Theatre with their show The Midnight Snack, which we called “a sixty-minute slapstick whirlwind of podcasting, baking, and murder“. Now the team is back, this time taking their snack in the graveyard rather than at midnight, where thay ask if a murder have happened if the person who is killed is already dead?

Having said in our review of The Midnight Snack that we “certainly hope we’ll see a lot more of them”, we thought we’d do just that by finding time to have a quick chat with them in advance of The Graveyard Snack playing at Lion & Unicorn Theatre for Camden Fringe from 22 – 24 August.

Welcome everyone, remind us who you are then?

We are Other Mysteries Theatre, an international ensemble that began as a group of friends with a desperate need to laugh in lockdown. We’re back at the Lion & Unicorn as part of the Camden Fringe with our new show The Graveyard Snack after the success of our Offie Nominated 2022 show The Midnight Snack.

What can audiences expect?

Our show is a wild comedy existing somewhere between What We Do in the Shadows and The Office. Sadly you won’t see the return of any Rubber Chickens, but you will see our second season of our Podcast series adapted for the stage and condensed into a whirlwind 50 minutes. We’ve even thrown in an extra actor to bear the burden of our infamous amount of multi-rolling.

What was the inspiration behind the show?

Our original team of writers from The Midnight Snack podcast and fringe show reunited to create a mystery where the victim isn’t technically dead, and the murderer isn’t technically alive. We’ve spent the last year and a half exploring the possibilities of how the afterlifes only radio station would report on a murder when it should be impossible. Surely everyone’s already dead, right?

Is Camden Fringe going to be the show’s first time on stage?

The original podcast is getting its final touches as we speak, so although it’s the show’s first time on stage, the script has been cooking for much longer. We always knew we wanted to explore some sort of existential crisis, but we didn’t know it would end up being about the end of the world (Or a potential Zombie apocalypse).

Any plans for what comes next after August – for you or the show?

We’ll release the podcast! Obviously we’d love everyone to make it out to see the show, but as we’re from three continents and two hemisphere’s our shows are also available as a narrative Podcast – so you’ll never miss out on the action.

What words of advice/ encouragement would you give anyone thinking about doing Camden Fringe next year?

Camden Fringe is how we found our feet in the game. It’s a really affordable and accessible festival to be a part of and great if you’re just starting out. Be as organised as you can and ask for help, if there’s something you don’t know how to do there will definitely be someone who’s done it before!

If one of the characters were to have a spin-off show, which one would you want to see the most?

Funny you should ask, this show already exists! One of our favourite characters from The Graveyard Snack is Grimmy the Reaper and in Deadline at the Lion and Unicorn you can see a whole show about him and his own existential crisis! We don’t know if their version of the afterlife has a Radio Station, but I guess we’ll have to book tickets to find out.

Many thanks to Other Mysteries Theatre for taking the time to chat. You can catch The Graveyard Snack when it plays at the Lion & Unicorn theatre between 22nd and 24th August. Further information and tickets are available here.

You can also listen to their last show as a podcast here.
