Review: As You Like It, Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London

Rating

Fun in the Shakespearean sun with The Handlebards.

The grand splendour of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, is an unusual spot for a bit of Shakespeare. However, on this balmy, sunny evening it couldn’t be more perfect, mixed with the quintessentially British foursome that are The Handlebards. Formed by four Shakespeare-loving friends in 2013, this fun troupe have grown to become a critically-acclaimed force in not only bringing the great Bard’s words to life in a relaxed and creative way, but doing so sustainably. This tour, along with several other performances by other offshoots of the ensemble, are being transported around the country by the creatives themselves on bicycles – props, costumes, set and all.

The Soane Stable Yard of the Royal Hospital is the ideal place for what is, essentially, a very simple performance – a beautiful (shady, thank goodness) courtyard, some temporary chairs, bunting and access to drinks and snacks bring the feel of a summer village fete or bazaar to the heart of Chelsea. The cast mingle with the audience members while some light, summer music (provided by cast member Joel Benedict) sets the scene, and we’re off.

As You Like It is a classic Shakespeare play and it really needs no introduction. What’s perfect throughout this performance, though, is that it has humour and a modern touch, slightly kitsch and slightly camp, which brings the Bard into 2026. The crowd tonight is mixed, from young children to mature adults, and all are there enjoying the adaptation, being carried along by the performers. It’s fun, it’s colourful, and it’s a contemporary twist, while not trying too hard; it’s very nicely directed by Mark Collier, who has really grasped the outdoor, summer entertainment vibe here.

The four stars of the show are nothing short of excellent. I have seen far less talent on a West End stage in a big-budget production. The camaraderie and energy between them are palpable throughout, no doubt enhanced by their bicycle travels between each performance, and never once do they miss a word or a move, despite playing multiple characters each. The costumes and props are simple yet cleverly thought out – a hat, a moustache, a coat and a single hair extension attached to a headband to name a few. But they work and really help to distinguish the characters.

Standouts for me are Josh Radcliffe and Isobel Donkin, both portraying the most character-driven parts with great aplomb and comic timing, mixing in some lovely singing, tomfoolery (without being too silly) and really engaging with the audience.

At various points, some audience participation is called for, and the crowd are more than happy to play along, especially the marvellous Peter, who no doubt regrets choosing a front row seat. It’s done in the very best of spirits though and with warm encouragement and thanks from the ensemble, making this a real highlight.

Musical and vocal interludes are perfectly placed throughout the evening and neatly take us in and out of scenes, everything wonderfully produced by Guy Hughes alongside accessibility consultants to make this a thoroughly immersive and inclusive show. All instruments and percussion are played by the cast who additionally create a range of sound effects, which really add to the light-hearted feel.

This is a highly enjoyable piece of work, built around a literary classic. I really can’t think of little more I’d rather be doing on such a lovely summer’s evening. Safe travels to your next location Handlebards!

Gary has had a keen interest in theatre since he was a child in suburban Gloucestershire, heightened to exciting levels since moving to London in 2022. He dived straight in to having a walk-on part in a show at Richmond Theatre, which he’d like to do more of, time permitting. He’s thrilled to be part of Everything Theatre, which is a world away, and welcome distraction, from his career in finance in the city.
