Aya Nakamura reveals the magic of Moominvalley this Christmas
First introduced to the world in the fabulous books by Finnish author Tove Jansson, the Moomins are now a worldwide phenomenon, loved globally and especially big in Japan. So it’s very exciting that this yuletide we are invited to step into their world at Jackson’s Lane theatre, as their fabulous show Christmas Comes to Moominvalley takes to the stage. We were delighted to chat with one of their team-mates, puppeteer Aya Nakamura, about what to expect.
Hello Aya. Can you firstly tell us what a Moomin is, for those who don’t know?
Moomins are troll-like creatures from a series of books written by Finnish artist Tove Jansson. When I hear the word troll, I imagine an ugly creature, but Moomins look very sweet. To me personally, they’re more like fairies, but a more down-to-earth kind of fairy creature. I feel they are peaceful, idealistic beings who just happen to be in non-human form, living in a parallel universe.
Can you tell us a little about the story in the show?
The Moomin family usually spend their winters hibernating, so they don’t know anything about winter or the festive nature of Christmas. One winter, the whole family is forced to wake up, and they learn about all the rituals of Christmas, like food and presents. However, they think Christmas is something terrible!
You’re working as a puppeteer with Moominmamma. What’s her role like?
Moominmamma is such an accommodating and caring character. She welcomes and accepts everyone as a member of the family. She’s a strong matriarchal figure who holds the family together.
What other favourite characters can we expect to meet?
You’ll meet the whole Moomin family, including Moomintroll, Moominpappa, and Snorkmaiden. We’ll also encounter characters like Hemulen and Fillyjonk.
In everyone’s imagination, Moominvalley is a magical place. How does the design for the production capture this?
Our designer, Alison, did a wonderful job bringing Moominvalley to life on stage. What I love about the design of this show is how, together with our lighting designer, Will, they captured the comic-strip essence of the Moomins. The comics actually ran first in London’s Evening News (now Standard) so it is a nice tie to the city.
Will there also be music in the show?
Oh yes! You’ll enjoy beautiful music, composed by Liam, throughout the show. One of the cast members, Xenia, plays the harp, and it’s absolutely exquisite — be sure to look out for it! There’s also a funny scene where we all play one instrument together.
Are there going to be any opportunities to meet the cast during the run?
There are – members and friends at Jackson’s Lane are also able to book in bonus post-event meet and greets with the cast. There are details about it on the website.
Thanks very much to Aya for telling us about this exciting show. I’m getting my snow boots on now!
Christmas Comes to Moominvalley is aimed at ages 3-103 and runs at Jackson’s Lane theatre until Sunday 5 January. Further information and booking details can be found here.
