This was my first visit to Above The Stag’s latest premises, and I think it’s the slickest building they’ve inhabited to date. It’s still under railway arches with regular distracting rumbles from the trains, but there’s a large bar area to accommodate waiting audiences, and the main theatre (there’s also a studio space now) is well-designed with a nice stage;seating ratio. Delightful musical rom-com with an instantly loveable cast.

An emotionally charged ninety minutes of real life experiences from real life veterans, made even more powerful by the casting of both Brits and Argentineans.

Pros: A fascinating and funny play in a tight, intimate venue, hidden under the Vauxhall Arches. Cons: For some, even if the subject matter doesn’t put you off, the rumbling of the trains overhead might just. Some plays just make no sense on paper. Who sits down thinking, “I know, let’s turn my biography of a barely known nineteenth-century homosexual prostitute into a play, and better yet, let’s make it a musical”?
