CSI: Crime Scene Improvisation is a crime comedy entirely crafted on the spot, where you, the audience, choose the victim. This interactive show combines audience participation with quick-witted performances, resulting in a one-of-a-kind murder mystery that unfolds in real time. Prepare for laughter as you meet the suspects, interrogate them in a lineup, and ultimately decide who’s headed for the clink.

Winners of the “Best Improv” award at the Leicester Comedy Festival 2023, this talented group demonstrate that they have perfected their format. With just three simple audience suggestions, they weave together a narrative that feels surprisingly coherent, despite the inherent spontaneity of improv. Their ability to pick up on each other’s cues is impressive, leading to a seamless flow of humour with minimal interruption, unlike many other improv groups. The cast excels at handling audience heckles, flipping them into punchy comebacks that leave everyone cheering.

The audience has ample opportunity to question each suspect during the lineup, adding to the chaotic fun. As the show nears its climax, we take charge, grilling each of the five suspects with wild questions. The spontaneity not only keeps the cast on their toes but also creates moments of ridiculousness that have everyone roaring with laughter.

The cast utilise minimal props, donning simple blue and black costumes that effectively convey their roles as detectives and suspects. Meanwhile, a whiteboard allows us to keep track of the victim, their occupation, and the murder weapon, further immersing us in our detective duties. Wilton’s Music Hall as a venue is a delightful addition to the experience, featuring a raised stage that ensures everyone has an unobstructed view. Its vintage charm and raised ceilings lend an eerie ambiance that perfectly complement the mystery of the show.

At this performance the audience was collectively dubbed “Detective Gregory”, making the experience feel personal and immersive. I was lucky enough to see a puppet turn out to be the murderer, humorously exposed by a cat hair toupee and I couldn’t stop laughing!

While there were moments when I felt a bit lost due to the rapid-fire nature of the improv, which made it challenging to grasp the complex relationships among the characters, this only ended up adding to the overall hilarity and unpredictability of the story.

This is an unforgettable adventure that comes highly recommended. CSI: Crime Scene Improvisation offers a great night full of laughter, mystery, and interactive fun!
