Podcast: A Librarian, civil servant and two journalists walk into a theatre
Craig Henry discusses his new play Her Country
Craig Henry‘s Her Country follows four young people navigating the early stages of their careers during a time of national upheaval. And yes, those four are made up of a librarian, a civil servant and two journalists. As far as we’re aware, they don’t all arive at the theatre together, although you can catch them all when the show plays at The Hope Theatre from 27 January as part of Write Club Festival 2025.
We chat about the play, it’s origins dating back to 2015 and the murder of Jo Cox, and what it is like to finally see the play staged after nine years in the making.
Her Country plays at The Hope Theatre from 27 – 30 January, tickets available here.

Personal struggles collide with national crisis in an exploration of divided Britain.
Her Country is Craig Henry’s latest play about four young people navigating the early stages of their careers during a time of national upheaval. A librarian in Yorkshire searching for love, a civil servant trying to find his way in Whitehall, and two journalists battling for a full-time job – each facing personal and professional struggles while living through the chaos of 2015/16.
Set against the backdrop of Brexit, the 2015 general election, and the tragic murder of Jo Cox, the play explores how these events shape the characters’ lives, forcing them to question their choices and their place in a divided society.
With humour, honesty, and sensitivity, Her Country paints a picture of a nation at a crossroads, where the personal and the political collide in unexpected ways.
