Podcast: Bringing Soap To The Stage

Penge West, Bridge House Theatre

Luke Adamson chats about Bridge House Theatre and new show Penge West

Bridge House Theatre‘s Artistic Director Luke Adamson joins us to chat about both the venue and there upcoming in-house production of Penge West.

Having now been in charge at the venue for four years, we chat about what led him here, the importance of fringe venues in the community, and why it is really is safe to head south of the river.

Their upcoming show, Penge West, is an attempt to bring the classic soap opera to the stage, with eight episodes played out over three weeks. As Luke tells us, it could all go horribly wrong, but that is going to be part of the fun of it all. Either way it should still provide plenty of fun and certainly something rather different.

Penge West plays from 17 June to 5 July, with each “episode” playing for two evenings. Further information and tickets available here.

A SOAP OPERA. ON STAGE. LIVE. IN PENGE.

Introducing: PENGE WEST – A CONTINUING DRAMA

For the first time in London (maybe ever?!), we’re bringing the addictive world of soaps to the stage — with a bold, brand-new format that rips up the rulebook and invites you into the drama.

Welcome to PENGE WEST — a live, episodic, laugh-out-loud, tear-your-heart-out continuing drama set right here in Penge. Over eight thrilling episodes, you’ll follow the tangled lives and secrets of a cast of very south-east London characters. Think EastEnders, if it had a pint with Inside No. 9, and then stayed up too late watching Succession.

But that’s just the half of it…
Before each episode, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes play-within-a-play: A CONTINUING DRAMA — the fictional (and hilarious) story of how PENGE WEST got made. Think of it as the soap about the soap.

Every night, the actors perform script-in-hand, keeping it raw, electric, and totally unpredictable. Audience reactions matter — your feedback could shape the next episode. So if you’ve ever shouted at the telly, now’s your chance to make it count.

Created by Tim Connery (The Man in the Shed, Chet Baker: Let’s Get Lost, What A Gay Day) and directed by John Handscombe (The One Hundred Year-Old Letter) and Luke Adamson (The Bridge House Theatre’s Artistic Director), this is a theatrical event unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Three weeks only. Eight episodes. Two shows in one.
Don’t just watch the drama — be part of it.

The episode schedule:

Episode 1: 17 & 18 Jun
Episode 2: 19 & 20 Jun

Episode 3: 23 & 24 Jun
Episode 4: 25 & 26 Jun
Episode 5: 27 & 29 Jun

Episode 6: 01 & 02 Jul
Episode 7: 03 & 05 Jul

The Finale Episode: 05 Jul
