Podcast: Be My Guest Are Our Guest.
Monia Baldini on her Edinburgh Fringe show Be My Guest
Ahead of two nights at Applecart Arts on 7 and 8 July, before then heading up to Edinburgh for August, we caught up with Monia Baldini to find out what Be My Guest is all about.
We discuss the show, where it came from, why she writes in English even though she is Italian, and how audiences vary from country to country. Plus a whole lot more.
Be My Guest
Each human being is a galaxy. Have you ever wondered how many guests live inside you? Come as you are and join Monia’s six guests on a cathartic and adventurous journey toward self-acceptance. Be My Guest is an interactive and meta-theatrical solo show that explores ways to embrace human fragility through the magical worlds of clown, bouffon, tragedy, improvisation, cabaret and physical comedy. Themes are hot and urgent: poverty, failure, isolation, dreams, motherhood and taboos. Won’t you come out to play with The Hostess, The Artist, Venus, Shelion, The Tragic Actress, and Me?
Monia Baldini: “The research started from a vivisection of myself, from the unexpressed and hidden. I decided to share what can be pathetic about me, funny, what I can bring up to share, laugh about, my vulnerabilities, the human fragility. I met several personae and simply decided to play them all. I have decided to celebrate their existences and their acceptance by making a show for them in which they can finally interact with each other and learn how to coexist with, and without, the interaction of the audience. Finally, celebrate and recognise our multitudes and silliness.”
Be My Guest has already captivated audiences in Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as part of the Fringe Encore Series and hosted at The SoHo Playhouse Theatre in NY City. Now, the show is set to make its mark at the upcoming Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it promises to be an unmissable theatrical experience.
