Scouts! The Musical is an exciting new production from Gigglemug Theatre, performed at The Other Palace Studio Theatre by a talented six person cast. With creative Scout-based puns and references, and inventive merchandise, including sew-on Scout badges, it explores the annual ‘Scout Games’, a competition where Scouts come together to prove they are deserving of the title of best Scout and the coveted golden badge. It is a very self-aware production that breaks the fourth wall and interacts with the audience brilliantly. With a wacky, humorous plot and a hilarious villain, it’s a strong show with so much energy!
Ayesha, played byvocal powerhouse Sydney Spencer, is an earnest and confident scout whose developing friendship with the keen, determined Joe, played by Joel Nash, is a beautiful plotline with nuance and heartfelt dialogue. Emily Kitchingham’s portrayal of the villainous Charlotte is hilariously delivered, with an equally impressive singing voice, complimented by the comedic and musical talents of Katie Pritchard as her brainwashed sidekick, Rosie. Kemi Clarke’s performance as the organised, slightly stressed Scout leader, Dylan, is particularly impressive as he lists off all the different types of Scout badges available to earn, mid song, whilst Rob Gathercole gives a high energy and comedic performance as Linus Lionheart, famous nature documentary maker and former Scout.
Scouts! uses its minimalist set well, but I would love to see something more developed that would further immerse the audience in the world of the Scout Games. The show’s director, bookwriter and co-lyricist, Sam Cochrane, who created Scouts! alongside David Fallon, has previously said he would love to see the production performed outside, where it would work excellently and would provide a more immersive atmosphere of scout camp.
Whilst the competitive concept of the Scout Games is enjoyable, the dialogue could be stronger, to ensure that each round of the games feels impactful, and to increase the audience’s investment in each character’s journey. Although the show’s use of audience participation is fun and engaging, it is quite fast and there is an element of predictability.
Cochrane and Fallon have written a very funny show, with clever songs, witty lyrics, and hilarious scouting jokes. With simple but effective costumes, it is perfect for licensing, and reminds greatly of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It has an impressive cast of actor-musicians performing an upbeat, exciting new score. They all play a range of instruments and swap between them with skill and precision. In a short hour and a half, this engaging, well-rounded story gives us an hilarious villain, the trials and tribulations of friendship, and a clear meaning.
Scouts! The Musical is a funny, enjoyable new musical with a great concept and a fantastically strong cast who perform witty lyrics with brilliant energy and enthusiasm. A fun show, perfect for families and all those that love the Scouts!
