The Show That Goes Backwards, Camden Comedy Club
For Camden Fringe 2025 we are attempting to reach 100 interviews to highlight as many of the shows performing as we possibly can. Every day we will publish new interviews, so do keep coming back to see how close to our target we can get. You can find all our Camden Fringe interviews here.
Laura Capaldi from Banana Hut Gang shares her love of improv with us, and gives an idea of what to expect from their backwards improv show at the fringe this summer. The Show That Goes Backwards is at Camden Comedy Club on 2 and 16 August, find out more and book here.
What can audiences expect from the show?
This show starts at the end and ends at the start, it’s a rip roaring race going backwards through time and all completely made up on the spot!
Is this your first time at Camden Fringe?
We performed at Camden Fringe last year and everyone that came to see it absolutely loved it. We’re really excited to be back this year ready to introduce more people to our backwards adventure!
What was it that drew you to this show and role?
As this is an improvised piece each of us get to play different characters and tell a different story every single time we perform. It’s such a fun show to do and we think we enjoy performing it almost as much as our audiences enjoy watching it.
What brought you all together?
We all started improvising together through an improv drop-in that Chris and Alex started back in 2017. The Banana Hut Gang formed out of that and we’ve been performing long form improv together ever since. We had a sell out Edinburgh Fringe run in 2019 with our previous show Choose Your Own Improv and since then we’ve been enjoying putting together new shows and coming up with increasingly crazy ideas!
How important is audience interaction to you?
We love for our audience to feel really involved in our show, but the only actual audience participation that we need for our show is a suggestion of one word at the start. This will form the basis of our whole show. If you’re coming along to our show have a think of a good word that you can shout out as a suggestion.
Are there any plans for what comes next after the show has finished its run for you or the show?
We’ve already started working on our next show which we’re hoping to debut soon. Keep your eyes on our socials for more news…
If you had to describe your show as a meal what would it be?
Our show as a meal is a tasting menu, small portions of delicious morsels but it starts with dessert and works backwards until you get to the starter.
If your show had a soundtrack, what songs would definitely be on it?
The soundtrack would definitely include Back in Time by Huey Lewis, If I could turn back time by Cher and Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Show.
If you could perform this show anywhere in the world, where would it be?
We’d love to perform this show on a West End stage. As long form improv gets more and more popular (Austentacious, Show Stoppers) we see this as a very real possibility.
What is the most valuable piece of advice you have received during your career and how has it influenced your work on this show?
Improv is all about being part of a team, you don’t have to build the whole house yourself, just bring a brick.
Thanks to Laura for giving us a taste of what to expect from this backwards improv, it sounds hilarious and confusing, and surely one not to be missed. The Show That Goes Backwards is at Camden Comedy Club on Saturday 2 and Saturday 16 August.
