Review: Make Me Look Fit on the Poster, Soho Theatre

Summary

Rating

Excellent

A hilarious stand-up comedy show that interrogates body image with self-deprecating honesty and wit.

We’ve all embarrassed ourselves horribly in front of someone we’ve fancied, right? Amy Gledhill brings her confessional comedy show about romance and self-image to Soho Theatre for a night full of laughs.

Make Me Look Fit on the Poster tackles themes of body image through the autobiographical confessions of Gledhill. Her Northern charm forefronts all things quintessentially British, from Toby Carvery to Go Ape, with a great knack for storytelling that makes the endearing yet unfortunate situations she recounts hilarious for her audience. Mark Labbett, knickers, bumholes for mouths and toilet rolls transform into comedic material that Gledhill uses to discuss romance and self-esteem through everyday observations and revelations.

Gledhill’s ability to balance solemn topics with the right amount of humour is flawless. One minute an audience is gasping in shock at her admissions of mistreatment by men and the next they are laughing at her visually hilarious euphemisms. Her self-deprecation is raw and honest, making her immediately likeable. She bounces off the energy of her audience in a way that makes her endearing; she is someone you’d meet on a night out and instantly befriend.

Gledhill is both a master at writing and delivery, interweaving personal anecdotes and frequently returning to previous material in a manner which feels natural. Confidence goes a long way for her, and even when her material feels a bit misguided, she keeps an audience engaged and giggling. The delivery is quick-witted and sharp, easily diverting and returning to her stories effortlessly. Her crowd work is equally impressive, making off-the-cuff jokes about and towards audience members that land with roars of laughter, and something I wish she engaged with more during the set.

It is evident why this show won Best Comedy at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards last year, with Gledhill proving again that she is a comedian to keep an eye out for. Providing a masterclass in stand-up comedy, she keeps audiences laughing for the entirety of her hour long set.
