The latest musical adaptation, The Devil Wears Prada, brilliantly captures the essence of ambition and transformation. Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the 2006 film, it follows the ambitious journalist Andy Sachs as she navigates the demanding world of high fashion under the iron fist of Miranda Priestly, a character that embodies power and perfection. The narrative explores how Andy’s pursuit of success leads her to sacrifice her personal life and ultimately become enchanted by the glamorous lifestyle she once despised.

The choreography, masterfully crafted by Jerry Mitchell, enhances the musical experience without overshadowing the central narrative. The captivating dance sequences seamlessly integrate with the music, allowing the characters’ journeys to unfold in a visually stimulating manner. The ensemble’s performances, from their impeccable movements to their stylish costumes, create a vibrant atmosphere that keeps the audience engaged throughout the evening.

Speaking of costumes, the fashion design, obviously, is a standout element. Each character’s wardrobe is meticulously curated, culminating in a perfect homage to the iconic Runway closet scene from the film. From tailored suits to glitzy dresses, the costumes ooze charisma and charm, making it impossible to take your eyes off any character on stage. However, I found some of Andy’s outfit reveals, particularly the much-anticipated moment when she removes her white jacket in Paris, to be somewhat disappointing. Instead of the grand reveal expected, it’s a simple white dress with minimal sparkle, which felt underwhelming given the buildup.

Emily, portrayed by Amy Bartolemo, experiences a character arc that shines even brighter here than in the original film. Her injury forces her to pause and reevaluate her priorities, allowing her humour and warmth to emerge, making her one of the most relatable characters on stage. Bartolemo’s performance is a delightful surprise, adding depth to Emily’s journey.

Georgia Buckland’s debut as Andy is noteworthy; she clearly possesses a natural talent for the stage, with her emotions and vocal abilities leaving a lasting impression. She captures the character’s scrappy determination and vulnerability with jaw-dropping vocals that resonate deeply with the audience. However, the star of the show undeniably remains Vanessa Williams. Her portrayal of Miranda Priestly is both captivating and intimidating, perfectly embodying the character’s complexities and leaving the audience in awe. The vocal performances are nothing short of breathtaking. The actors deliver their lines with flawless precision, creating an emotionally resonant experience.

Visually, it strikes an impressive balance between sleekness and drama. The minimalist sets are complemented by stunning, colourful costumes that appeal to both fashion enthusiasts and those less familiar with the industry. The audience walkways cleverly serve as runways for the models, immersing the audience in the action and further enhancing the interactive experience.

The Devil Wears Prada is a spectacular musical that successfully translates the essence of the classic film to the stage. With powerful performances, stunning choreography, and a vivid visual presentation, it captures the complexities of ambition, identity, and the world of fashion. This is a must-see for fans of the original story and newcomers alike.
