Aini Javaid on being an SPID Theatre’s 2022 Estate Endz Ambassador

Our latest guest on our Runn Radio show was Aini Javaid. Aini is a 2022 SPID Theatre Ambassador for their upcoming Estate Endz exhibition.

Who are SPID Theatre

SPID makes art that advocates housing justice. Since 2005, the award winning charity’s plays, films, tours and exhibitions have dramatized the history of social housing. Partners include North Kensington Library, Kids on the Green, Targeted Prevention Group, Octavia Housing Association, the Museum of Brands, the Curve, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Bush Theatre, the Playground Theatre, Full of Life, Trellick Residents Association, Kensal Residents Association, 20th Century Society,  Shelter, and University College London.  They are based in Kensal House estate close to Grenfell. This year their ground breaking £2.6m refurbishment of Kensal House Estate Community rooms finally began. They have united lease holders and tenants to make RBKC fulfil their statutory duties regarding access and safety to bring the whole estate up to standard.

Estate Endz Exhibition

Over the last 12 weeks SPID’s young participants (13-25 year olds) on their ‘Estate Endz’ programme have been gaining skills in audio-visual with the guidance of industry professionals specialising in audio-visual and architecture. With social housing heritage and solidarity at the heart of the project, the participants have been curating audio-visual material which will contribute to an exhibition taking place on the iconic Alexandra Rd Estate, London (26 Nov-Tenants Hall) and the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum (27 Nov- Learning Centre/Art Studio). The workshops that have been running on an in-person and online hybrid format, has seen the participants connecting and working collaboratively with Sutton Hill Estate residents in Telford. The exhibition will take you on a journey through time, transporting you to the resident’s homes and experiences through the magic of audio-visual.

The Podcast

As big fans of SPID we thought it was about time we spoke to them, or at least someone involved with one of their projects. And that’s how we found ourselves chatting to Aini. She tells us what’s involved in being an ambassador for their latest project, why being part of it has been such a fulfilling experience and what she hopes for the future.
