The Same Deep Water As Me, Donmar Warehouse

Nick PayneDirected by John Crowley ★★★★ Pros: Great writing that will have you laughing all evening. Cons: The joke! I’m saying no more. The ending might not feel right to everyone. Our Verdict: Humour applied to an unsavoury element of current culture. Social commentary with a funny bone. Courtesy of Johan Perrson and Donmar Warehouse The Donmar Warehouse* is one of my favourite theatres and I’ve never seen a poor production there. With this in mind, I was excited to ...

Trelawny of the Wells, Donmar Warehouse

Arthur Wing Pinero Directed by Joe Wright★★★ Pros: This is a funny, easily digestible performance with a great cast and clever stage direction. The costumes and props evoke a real sense of the age and provides a big stage feel in the small Donmar space.Cons: It is a very old-fashioned play and a little predictable with it. Whilst it has humour and finesse, it lacks charisma. I found it a bit dull despite some wonderful acting. Our Verdict: This is a ...

Julius Caesar, Donmar Warehouse

William ShakespeareDirected by Phyllida Lloyd★★★★★ Pros: The fantastic stage setting, ingenious direction, innovative lighting, creative sound, intelligent interpretation of a classic tragedy…. They are all just an amazing backdrop for this first class all-female cast. Cons: None whatsoever. It’s a great script, an amazing cast and a sensational set. Our Verdict: There are so many reasons to see this production: the extraordinary dynamic of the all-female, top drawer cast; the representation of power, loyalty and conspiracy; the fantastic detail in ...

Berenice, Donmar Warehouse

Jean Racine in a new version by Alan HollinghurstDirected by Josie Rourke★★ Pros: Passionate performances by Anne-Marie Duff and Stephen Campbell Moore. The set was visually striking and the quality of the production at the Donmar is excellent. Cons: This play is hard going. The plot is simple and dull, the dialogue is long winded and tedious. Not a lot happens in one hour and thirty five minutes – it was very difficult to stay awake. Our Verdict: Don’t see ...

Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Donmar Warehouse

Brian FrielDirected by Lyndsey Turner★★★ Pros: A great script with an interesting concept in splitting the lead role between two actors. Well-acted by a credible cast. Cons: The stage direction could have been more dynamic and the set design significantly restricted the view from my seat. Our Verdict: An enjoyable, well-acted production. Full appreciation was hindered by the bizarrely obstructed view so select your seats carefully*! Courtesy of Johan Persson for The Telegraph Right – I am going to have ...

The Recruiting Officer, Donmar Warehouse

George FarquharDirected by Josie Rourke★★★★ Pros: A great play, some sublimely funny performances, and a highly entertaining evening. Cons: None really, one slightly weak performance and a very hot venue (if those count!). Our Verdict: Highly recommended, a very funny production which is well worth seeing, and a great start for Josie Rourke. Care of Johan Persson It’s all changed at the Donmar since I went to see Streetcar Named Desire a couple of years ago. Well, not all changed. ...
