Routes, Royal Court – Review

Rachel DelahayDirected by Simon Godwin ★★★★ Pros: Great writing supported by strong performances and pared-back but excellent direction. Cons: Nothing. This is a very good play that I found both enjoyable and moving. Our Verdict: These poignant intertwined stories about migration manage to be simultaneously funny, hard-hitting and emotionally truthful. Go see it! Othello, National Theatre – Review

William Shakespeare Directed by Nicholas Hytner ★★★★ Pros: One of the clearest productions of Othello I have seen. Had the whole audience on the edge of their seat for the whole 3 hours and 15 minutes. Cons: Rory Kinnear plays Iago with an accent that doesn’t sit well for some reason. Our Verdict: Shakespeare’s finest characters played by Britain’s finest actors and helmed by one of theatre’s finest directors. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Noel Coward Theatre – Review

William ShakespeareDirected by Michael Grandage ★★★★★  Pros: A lavish, contemporary, comical production with an outstanding cast. The relatable interpretation succeeded in bringing this play full of fairies and spells to a wide and appreciative audience. Cons: I’m grasping at straws, but Padraic Delaney as Oberon/Theseus is a little less commanding than I expected from the king of the fairies/Duke of Athens. Our Verdict: Grandage’s interpretation proves the timelessnes of Shakespeare’s writing. Don’t be put off if you are not a ...

Part of the Deloitte Ignite Festival 2013 Written and performed by Simon Callow Directed by Simon Stokes ★★★★ Pros: Witty, well-pitched and refreshing taste of classical music.  Cons: It’s difficult to find any. Price of tickets is a little high given the ethos of the festival.  Our Verdict: An eloquently written, superbly performed and directed potted history of Richard Wagner. Courtesy of Royal Opera House  Straight up, I am no great listener of classical music. I have been to the ...

The Pride, Trafalgar Studios

by Alexi Kaye Campbell Directed by Jamie Lloyd ★★★ Pros: The acting is very strong, and there is a nice balance between drama and humour. Cons: With the exception of one scene, there is little action or movement on stage. Also, the set is not particularly inspiring. Our Verdict: This thought-provoking play accurately captures the past and the present, in terms of male sexual identity. The performances are honest, and there is great character development.   Courtesy of Ambassador Theatre ...

The Same Deep Water As Me, Donmar Warehouse

Nick PayneDirected by John Crowley ★★★★ Pros: Great writing that will have you laughing all evening. Cons: The joke! I’m saying no more. The ending might not feel right to everyone. Our Verdict: Humour applied to an unsavoury element of current culture. Social commentary with a funny bone. Courtesy of Johan Perrson and Donmar Warehouse The Donmar Warehouse* is one of my favourite theatres and I’ve never seen a poor production there. With this in mind, I was excited to ...
