A night full of surprises and memorable writing.Summary

Excellent
Having no real understanding of how Harry Daisley was going to use the concept of dating in the future, I am amazed by this compelling piece of writing. Set in a future not to dissimilar from our present, couples must pass the Venus project before the age of 25 to prove they are suitable for marriage, children and an asset to society at large. The Upward Journey of a Champagne Bubble covers just one of these couples exam days but trust me you don’t want to miss it.
The world building is done so seamlessly that this futuristic world is believable from the get go, Daisley’s choice of words is considered in every sentence, shaping a narrative so absurd yet completely believable. This fresh piece combines comedy and horror so smoothly, I couldn’t possibly have predicted the pivotal ending and neither did anyone else judging for the audible gasps coming from the audience.
The acting is all round brilliant, each characters strong development throughout the play is shown in every facial expression and adjustment of their surroundings. The contrast between the young couple (Maisie Stalham and Ben Greenwood) and the pompous examining couple (Siobhan Ward and Matthew Dangerfield) offers space for physical gags and interesting dynamics between the different characters.
The isolating setting of the young couples small house as a physical representation of the high pressure environment is portrayed well, visually using the shuffling of chairs and objects on the table to show the changing relationships between the four characters. When necessary, simple lighting is used to divide space, highly effective when ping pong-ing between two private conversations. The space is designed to bring the couples together but the costume is cleverly used to divide them, creating contrast with light and dark colours further portraying their wealth divide.
Themes of wealth, love and societal expectations run throughout, addressing many of the difficulties and pressures young couples face today. It isn’t afraid to comment on sex, attraction and desire, creating an honest portrayal of relationships, particularly when one is in the hot seat.
This fast pace piece is a joy ride of the unspeakable, building to boiling point as the character crash through a night of dating to the extreme. Supported by a literal suitcase of tricks, this show has twists and turns keeping you on the edge of your seat. The poignant writing and expressive characterisation turn a date night into a fascinating commentary on relationships.
