Review: Remember that Time? A Musical, EdFringe

Annmarie shares her intimate story of how a difficult break up in bustling LA forces her to reconsider her life’s path and move back to her home town of Dublin to continue pursuing her musical dream and rediscover herself. A thought provoking and raw storytelling performance with key messages of perseverance, not loosing hope and self belief supported by Annmarie’s incredible musicianship and clever multi-media sequences.

We are drawn in instantly by Annmarie’s enticing story telling ability and raw emotion. The way she manages to talk directly to the audiences hearts as well as make us chuckle with the lighter moments in the script makes for a most humbling theatre experience . There are some superb creative moments in this 50 minute piece with very clever digitally supported sequences featuring the recorded vocal talents of Gearoid Farrelly and Naimee Coleman on the simulated Skype call where all 3 performers share a heart felt song together, such a clever idea and very on point with todays world. The accompanying video clips featuring the band are also really effective in aiding the authenticity of the piece and breaking the fourth wall to further illustrate the stages of Annmarie’s life.

Annmarie’s original songs and lyrics are truly something to behold, such quality in the music I could quite happily sit and listen to the songs alone for hours. Very well supported technically with all the additional effects running in a seamless and synchronized fashion which must have required some practice to perfect the timings. A simple set with microphone, laptop and TV screen which added to the intimacy of the piece as we were drawn into Annmarie’s personal world.

A poignant and thought provoking piece with beautiful moments of musical accompaniment and multi-media stage craft.
