About The Sum of Us at Above The Stag

Above The Stag Theatre opens its autumn season with Australian comedy-drama The Sum of Us, playing from 9 September, running until  Sunday 4 October. Progressive for its time, The Sum of Us was a hit Off-Broadway and later adapted as a film in 1994 starring Russell Crowe. The play is directed by Gene David Kirk, former Artistic Director of Jermyn Street Theatre, fresh from a successful run of Closer To Heaven by Jonathan Harvey and Pet Shop Boys at the Union Theatre.

After meeting in a local pub, Jeff and a young gardener, Greg hit it off and begin to date. When he meets Jeff’s Dad however, Greg begins to back off – but why? Meanwhile Dad too has a new flame – Joyce – he met through a dating service. Put off by Jeff’s homosexuality, narrow-minded Joyce too pulls away just before a surprising and poignant ending.

About Louie Corpe

Louie is the co-founder and joint managing editor of Everything Theatre. He met James at university, and this event definitively changed his life for the worst. These days he a Ph.D. student in particle physics working on the Higgs boson's decay to two photons (seriously). He claims that theatre is his only release from an existence of signal-to-background ratios, selection efficiency and C++ programming. His particular preference is for well-executed site-specific productions and anything by Tom Stoppard. He has been widely misquoted as saying he "hates musicals". This is not true. He simply has not yet come across a musical he hasn't disliked.
