Priceless Theatre from MasterCard – Closed

Here at everything theatre we love a good bargain. A while back, as part of the research for our everyone theatre interview series, we spent a rather cold and miserable afternoon on the streets of London asking people about why they didn’t go to the theatre. The top excuse was the price. So that’s why it’s so exciting when theatre opportunities are given away at reduced prices. If things are being given away for free then that’s even better. Well, thanks to Mastercard, that’s exactly what is happening at the moment.

As many theatre fans will know, MasterCard are the sponsors of the upcoming Olivier Awards, the biggest and most prestigious set of awards in the UK’s theatrical calendar. What many of you may not know is that MasterCard actually run a wider scheme in support of the London theatre scene called Priceless Theatre. This is basically a series of epic competitions and package offers that MasterCard holders can take advantage of. Incidentally, that is the extent of the small print (as far as we can see): you have to have a MasterCard to take advantage of it all.

To give you an example of what’s on offer at the moment, you can currently enter a totally free competition which will give you a chance to win one of two epic prizes. The first is a We Will Rock You experience which includes the chance to perform with the cast of the show during a rehearsal, top price tickets to the show for you and 3 friends, dinner in the West End, a night of accommodation in a luxury hotel and some cool merchandise. The second is a VIP experience at the Olivier Awards themselves including a walk on the red carpet, lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant, premium tickets to the awards, entry to the after party and a night in a 5 star hotel.

This later prize in particular irritates us a bit. Unfortunately, everything theatre didn’t quite make the guest list for the Oliviers. Outrageous, I’m sure you’ll agree. In protest, we splashed out and bought some non-VIP audience tickets at £60 a pop. No meal, no hotel, no after party. Brilliant.

Before anybody starts questioning our motives, yes, as we are happy to make clear, this is our first ever ‘sponsored’ post, so of course we’re going to recommend that you get involved in this MasterCard scheme. However, being objective as we can be, this does seem like a bit of a no-brainer to be honest… It’s schemes like this that reduce those pesky price theatre price barriers, so we’re all for corporate sponsorship when it makes things cheaper for us all! Even if you don’t enter the competition, the scheme still has some great bargains on offer, from reduced price pre-show meals to theatre tickets with post.

All of this forms part of MasterCard’s Priceless London scheme. This is not just about theatre. Instead it’s more generally about creating ‘priceless’ (we’ve all seen the adverts!) moments in London’s cultural scene. So there are offers for museums, galleries, restaurants and more. The catch remains the same: you have to have a MasterCard to be involved. Hardly a big deal really.
